ChatGPT now has expanded capabilities for everything from assisting with research to completely doing your homework for you. Many ChatGPT answers already sound like student essays, despite having a stuffier and more pedantic tone than a writer might desire.

Daniel Herman, a high school teacher, came to the conclusion that ChatGPT already writes better than the majority of students today. He struggles between appreciating ChatGPT’s potential value and worrying about its negative effects on human learning. Is this situation more like the invention of the calculator, which freed me from doing tedious long division, or more like the invention of the player piano, which deprived us of the kinds of communication that can only be accomplished through human emotion?

“Educators thought Google, Wikipedia, and the internet itself would ruin education,” York said. “What worries me most are educators who may actively try to discourage the acknowledgment of AI like ChatGPT. It’s a tool, not a villain.”
